Chapin is a twenty-five minute run for us — Broad River Road out to Harbison, onto I-26 west past Irmo and Ballentine, and off at the Chapin exits. Columbia Avenue takes you through the middle of town in about ninety seconds, and then everything interesting is on the roads that run off it toward the water. Amicks Ferry Road is the one we are on most, because that is where the lake is and where most of the work is. It calls itself the Capital of Lake Murray and that is not marketing — a large share of what we haul out of Chapin came off a dock, a boathouse or a lakefront lot.

Chapin has been the fastest-growing corner of Lexington County for two decades, and the housing splits cleanly. On the water and just back from it you have lake houses ranging from 1970s cottages that have been added onto three times to new construction on slab. Every house here sits on piers over a vented crawlspace or on a slab — older lake stock is pier-built, sometimes stepped, sometimes stepped down a slope toward the water, and the new work is slab-on-grade. Humidity plus a shaded lot plus forty years of a vented crawl gives you sagging insulation, rotted framing at the band joist and ductwork that has to come out in pieces.

Getting a truck to you

I-26 west from Harbison to the Chapin exits, then Columbia Avenue through town and Amicks Ferry Road out to the water. Twenty-five minutes from the yard on a normal morning, longer if I-26 is backed up at the Irmo interchange. Weekend lake traffic on Amicks Ferry in summer is the other slow spot. Give us the road, the slope and width of the drive, whether there is a septic tank, drain field or well head near the set, any low pine limbs over the approach, and whether the load is dock timber, storm brush or crawlspace debris — those three want different handling and sometimes different containers.
