Roll-off containers for Cayce homes and jobsites

Cayce is a twenty minute run south from the yard and sits on the Lexington County side of the Congaree, just below West Columbia. Two rivers and a county line define it, and the city has been quietly doing what a lot of older river towns do — the housing stock is being bought and reworked one street at a time. Old Cayce and the Avenues are the heart of it: 1920s through 1950s houses on brick piers over vented crawlspaces, mature water oaks over the streets, and enough original material inside to make a renovation a real job rather than a cosmetic one.

The renovation work here follows the same pattern every time. Original kitchens and baths come out, floors get refinished or replaced, and then somebody opens the crawlspace and the scope changes. Midlands humidity in a vented crawl produces rotted band joists, sagging or fallen insulation, ruined ductwork, a shredded vapour barrier and standing water, and once the insulation is off the termite damage becomes visible. Subterranean termites are widespread here and a termite bond is a normal part of a South Carolina house sale, so the discovery is common rather than unlucky. That debris — wet, dirty, awkward and heavier than it looks — is one of the most frequent loads we haul out of Cayce.

The rest is river, air and industry. The Cayce Riverwalk runs along the Congaree and the low-lying ground near it takes attention whenever a long rain sits over the Midlands, which is exactly what happened in October 2015. Columbia Metropolitan Airport is just south, and the commercial and light industrial ground along Airport Boulevard and the 12th Street Extension gives us a steady run of commercial cleanouts, tenant fit-outs and roof tear-offs alongside the residential work.

What we know about working in Cayce

The Cayce specifics come down to trees, streets and jurisdiction. The old Avenues have mature water oak and live oak arching over the pavement, and a roll-off hoist arm needs serious vertical clearance to raise and set a box — considerably more than a delivery van. Flag a low limb when you book and we will bring a shorter container or set at the apron instead. Driveways in Old Cayce are often original concrete, narrow and cracked, and protection boards go under every container as standard. Placement in the street is a City of Cayce conversation and those requirements should be checked before you plan on it, because they do change. Jurisdiction matters generally here: Cayce is Lexington County and its own city, which is a different rulebook from Richland County across the river and from West Columbia next door, and demolition adds a state-level asbestos inspection and notification through SC DES. On material, treat any pre-1980 house as suspect for asbestos in floor tile and mastic, pipe wrap and siding, and pre-1978 for lead paint — we cannot take asbestos-containing material in any container. Keep yard debris out of the construction box: South Carolina keeps grass, leaves, brush and limb wood out of landfill disposal, and after a storm the water oak and loblolly limb wood alone will fill a container as its own clean load. If anybody is digging near the placement, call SC 811 first.

Getting a truck to you

Twenty minutes from the yard, coming down through Columbia and over one of the bridges, or across from West Columbia on Knox Abbott Drive. Airport Boulevard and the 12th Street Extension for the commercial side. The bridges at commute hours are the main delay. Tell us if the street has low oak limbs over it, whether the driveway is original narrow concrete, whether the house is pre-1980, and if the load includes crawlspace material — wet insulation and rotted framing want a different plan from a clean remodel load.

Routes we run: I-26 east then I-77 or US-21 south toward the river, Knox Abbott Drive across from the Blossom Street bridge, State Street and the 12th Street Extension through the older city, Airport Boulevard toward Columbia Metropolitan Airport.

Permits, streets and placement in Cayce

On a private driveway in Cayce you generally do not need a municipal permit. Placement in the public street or right-of-way is a different matter and normally requires approval — from the city or county where the road is locally maintained, or from SCDOT where it is a state route. Every municipality in Lexington County runs its own form and its own lead time, and older streets here often have narrow shoulders and deep drainage ditches, so plan the permit before you plan the delivery. It is a ten-minute call that saves a week.

Our permit and placement guide walks through the whole process, and SC DES publishes the Covered Device Recycling Act rules and the other statewide disposal restrictions that apply to every load we haul out of Cayce. County recycling and household hazardous waste dates are published by Richland County.

Dumpster Rental in Cayce — FAQs

Will low tree limbs stop a delivery in Old Cayce?

They can. Mature water oaks over those streets hang lower than people notice from a car, and a roll-off needs real vertical clearance above the truck to raise the arm and set the box. Tell us about a low limb when you book and we will bring a shorter container or set at the apron. We will not cut a limb to make a delivery fit, so a heads-up saves a wasted trip for both of us.

What comes out of a Cayce crawlspace repair?

Wet batt insulation, torn vapour barrier, rotted band joist and floor joist sections, crushed flex duct, and often termite-damaged framing that nobody knew about until the insulation came down. It is heavy once it has taken on moisture and awkward to load. A 15 or 20 yard covers most crawlspace repair and encapsulation jobs on an Avenues-era house. If structural framing is being replaced, tell us and we will size for weight.

Do I deal with Cayce or Lexington County for a permit?

Both can apply. Cayce is its own city inside Lexington County, so city requirements sit on top of county ones, and that is a separate system from Richland County across the river. Demolition also generally triggers an asbestos inspection and notification handled at state level through SC DES. Since that programme recently moved out of DHEC, confirm the current process before you schedule anything.

How quickly can you deliver a dumpster to Cayce?

Cayce is about 10 miles south of our Broad River Road yard, so it is a routine run for us. Same-day delivery is usually possible if you call before about 11am, and next morning otherwise. Storm weeks and the spring remodeling peak can stretch that, and we will tell you honestly when you call.

Do you charge extra to deliver to Cayce?

No. Cayce sits inside our standard service area and the flat rate is the same as it is in Columbia. Delivery, pickup, your rental window and disposal up to the agreed tonnage are all included in the number we quote you.

What size dumpster do most Cayce customers take?

A 20 yard is the most common by a wide margin — it suits kitchen guts, multi-room renovations and three-bedroom house cleanouts. But if you are stripping plaster and lath out of a pre-war house, or moving brick, block, concrete or a chimney, size DOWN to a 10 yard heavy container and take two hauls — that material hits the weight limit long before it fills the box.
